Expansion Project of
the Panama Canal

The third set of locks is a gigantic project to expand the Panama Canal. This extension will be the largest since the building of the Canal. The project foresees to double the Canal’s capacity to allow more traffic.

Masterline Logistics Panamá had the privilege of being invited to participate of this colossal project.

A first shipment of 36 concrete beams manufactured in Spain were transported by water and reached Panama.

The beams reached first to the port of Manzanillo, in Colon Province, from various truck motorcades transported by land, a total of 36 pieces to the site of the locks in the Atlantic. Each prefabricated beam has a weight of 30/40 tons and a length of 18 mt.

The operation, that took seven days, implied the transport of a total weight of 1204 tons of concrete, and the participation of our local team, to give specific solutions at each stage of the project.

During the next 20 years, the cargo volume that transits through the Canal will grow at a rate of three percent per year, doubling the tons so far on the year from 2005 to 2025. As such, the Canal capacity should be conditioned for the passing of bigger ships that will make it more efficient by allowing the transit of bigger cargo volumes, at a relative lower price and with less consumption of water.
